12 Wild Days – Yuletide Card Set

£84.00

Ah, Midwinter – the longest night, the peak of darkness in the northern hemisphere and the tipping point when daylight begins to stretch out. Winter solstice – with the planet’s tilt allowing us to receive light as we circle the sun. A primeval trigger for birds, beasts and plant-life. A cause to celebrate. Yuletide, the earliest recorded winter festival, is held over the last 12 days of the year and is dedicated to the return of the sun.

In medieval England, Yule was a stew of pagan, heathen, nordic and germanic practices and beliefs yielding wild revelry and gratitude – a time to honour our female forebears on the Night of the Mothers; to light a Yule Log and bring light to the dark nights; to celebrate the Night of the Wild Hunt and feast with friends and family; to dance the dark night away with music and to rouse the spirits of the Oak King and the Holly King. Behind the practices lay timeless sentiments, ancient truths passed down from our forebears.

These 12 rough-hewn prints are intended to invite these values into your home – to conjure up the dancing bones of the world’s oldest winter festival. Scatter these distilled customs throughout your home alongside bay, spruce and and berry – find lonely corners, alcoves and hollows in which to sit these winter charms. Nail, hang, prop or nestle them amongst your seasonal paraphernalia and allow them to imbue their message. Drawn, carved and printed by hand, these ‘alt’er pieces use natural linseed inks and recycled card stock and very little else. The hope being that they encourage a simpler, natural and more connected 12 days, before we all begin another lap around the sun.
